The tech industry is a powerhouse of innovation, constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible. But when it comes to gender equality, the progress has been slow and uneven. Our latest State of Gender Equity in Tech report, based on a survey of 483 women in tech globally, sheds light on the current state of affairs.
Experiences of Sexism and the Need for Action
More than half of the women surveyed reported experiencing sexism at work in the past year. This is a disheartening statistic that underscores the need for concrete action. While 70% of respondents said their companies prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), a significant disconnect exists. Almost half (nearly double the figure from last year's survey) reported a lack of effective measures to combat gender inequality. This suggests that many companies are simply paying lip service to DE&I initiatives without implementing meaningful change.
Obstacles on the Path to Leadership
Unconscious bias, balancing work and family life, and the scarcity of women in leadership roles remain significant hurdles. While 59.8% of respondents identified the lack of women leaders as a major obstacle, a positive sign is that the majority (80.4%) work in companies with at least one woman in senior management. This exposure to female role models can be crucial in inspiring and empowering other women to pursue leadership positions.
Empowerment and Support: A Beacon of Hope
Despite the challenges, there are glimmers of hope. The survey revealed that 76.1% of women feel empowered to pursue leadership roles, showcasing their ambition and drive. Additionally, a sense of support exists within many workplaces. Most respondents (68%) feel their professional development is supported, and 60.2% believe their employers offer adequate upskilling opportunities. This foundation of support is crucial for fostering an environment where women can thrive.
The Road Ahead: A Call to Action
The data paints a complex picture. While there's a positive shift towards empowering women in tech, substantial work remains. Companies need to move beyond performative DE&I statements and implement actionable plans to address unconscious bias, create inclusive work cultures, and bridge the gender pay gap.
This report serves as a call to action for the entire tech industry. Let's create open dialogues where these issues can be addressed. Let's champion initiatives that support and empower women in tech. Let's work together to build a future where the tech landscape truly reflects the diversity of the talent pool.
We can't afford to leave half of our potential behind. It's time to close the gap and unlock the full potential of women in tech.
